The new Expedition and Community Outreach Coordinator will assist with expedition-related communications and outreach programs, with the goal of engaging, influencing, and generating public support for a healthy ocean through advanced scientific research, technology innovation, and open sharing of information. The Expedition and Community Outreach Coordinator should have an outstanding work ethic, be highly organized, and able to thrive with a highly productive schedule within a small team. A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or digital media is required. We are looking for someone who is passionate about ocean science, who is an effective communicator, and who loves working with diverse audiences — from school groups to scientists. The Expedition and Community Outreach Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Marine Communications, and work together on a variety of strategic communications tasks and initiatives. They will be responsible for implementing expedition outreach plans, generating community engagement, media coverage, and developing written content for Schmidt Ocean Institute’s website and interactive programs. This position may include some travel to the research vessel Falkor (location varies, including international).
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, ocean science, journalism, environmental studies, social science, or related field; Two or more years’ of experience in marine science outreach, science/environmental communications, public and media relations, marketing and/or journalism; Strong understanding and interest in ocean science; Experience developing communications for multiple audiences and proactively working with others to produce material; Ability to develop and tailor appropriate communication for diverse audiences; Effective storytelling capabilities with a strong ability to develop visual presentations for promotional/outreach material; Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to diverse audiences; Demonstrated ability to organize and schedule program activities and efficiently plan for multiple events; Professional experience managing websites, ideally using WordPress; Professional experience developing content and managing social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube; Proficient in Google suite of office software, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, etc; Experience developing program announcements, including press releases and other public relations materials; Experience working with scientists and researchers; Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain a positive collaborative relationship with internal staff and external collaborators; Ability to independently address and solve problems; Ability to pay attention to detail and adherence to deliverables with strong time management and coordination skills; Comfortable building relationships and working independently or with a distributed network of people across the world. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, ocean science, journalism, environmental studies, social science, or related field; Experience in science/technical translation; Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, Experience managing the implementation of graphic design work and/or video production; Experience with social media analytics; Shipboard and boating experience; Valid passport and driver’s license.
Responsible for implementing expedition outreach activities and communications program logistics; Assist with the creation and maintenance of research expedition web pages, blogs, real-time and interactive content on the organization’s website including message development about Schmidt Ocean Institute and research vessel Falkor with staff and contractors; Assist with the development of school and community outreach activities and events including remote community engagement through live connections to Falkor; Assist with media development, press releases, and social media posts; Monitor and track communication activities, and identify external opportunities to engage with the public; Develop supplementary materials including reports, meeting minutes, fact sheets, posters, and newsletters; Compile, edit, and distribute documents to internal and external audiences; Assist with and monitor live streaming of deep-sea dives with ROV SuBastian; Present and share the organization’s successes and scientific work and discoveries in community and industry presentations and events.
